Founders
Laura Cassidy, M.D
CO-FOUNDER & BOARD CHAIR
I started LKA with another mom of a dyslexic child. We started the school out of frustration, disbelief, and a desire to change the options for other children. As parents of dyslexics we saw up close the nightmare dyslexia can be if children don't have trained teachers that understand dyslexia. Dyslexia can destroy a child's self esteem if it goes unrecognized in the language rich environment of school. I am so proud of LKA. It is more than a school--it is a community of trained, knowledgeable caring professionals whose mission is to unlock the potential of dyslexic children.
Suzanne Petty, MEd, CALT
CO-FOUNDER
Suzanne Petty is currently a dyslexia therapist and reading interventionist at Louisiana Key Academy in Baton Rouge. She and Dr. Laura Cassidy co-founded Louisiana Key Academy in 2013 in response to the severe lack of instructional resources and support systems for their own dyslexic children and thousands like them in Louisiana. A humble recognition of the complex, instructional dynamics of dyslexia led her to acquire an MEd in Special Education and an MEd in Dyslexia Therapy from William Carey University. At LKA she provides intensive, small group, remediation therapy for 4th and 5th grade; instructional team and curriculum development support; and assists in fundraising initiatives, after-school clubs, and coaching girls basketball. As another layer of support for LKA and the pedagogy of dyslexia, Suzanne is also in training at the Dyslexia Resource Center, located in Baton Rouge, as a Quality Instructor for dyslexia therapists. She also serves as vice-president for the Louisiana chapter of the national Academic Language Therapy Association.
