LKA teachers are trained through an IMSLEC accredited center, the Dyslexia Resource Center. LKA teachers spend one to two years studying about dyslexia so they understand the science behind dyslexia and what that looks like in the classroom. LKA teachers are trained so that the dyslexic child can reach their full potential and enjoy classroom learning.
Unidentified dyslexic children struggle in school and they don’t know why they are struggling. They are bright and work hard but the classroom can be a place of defeat. LKA identifies children with dyslexia, celebrates their strengths, and remediates their weaknesses.
Dyslexics are slow readers but smart thinkers. LKA relies on the dyslexic’s strengths which include critical thinking, reasoning, and creativity to learn content material. Once a dyslexic identifies their strengths they are empowered to persist on tasks that rely on their weaknesses.
School can be hard for dyslexic children but when they know they are smart and there is a scientific reason for their struggles they learn to persevere. If dyslexic children and their parents understand the child’s potential they can encourage and equip one another. This “enlightened” perseverance build character and prepares the students for a successful life.
Children that embrace dyslexia can learn how to advocate for themselves without shame. LKA students learn what they need and how to ask for it in the school setting. It is extremely important for dyslexic students to understand dyslexia-that they are smart despite struggles, accept it, work hard, and ask for appropriate accommodations.
At Louisiana Key Academy, our mission is to provide an innovative and effective learning curriculum to children who have been diagnosed with dyslexia. In doing so, we align ourselves with a vision where all children are given the tools they need to thrive. We believe that dyslexics should be identified and given the education necessary to reach their full potential. LKA is here as a champion for dyslexics as they engage in an excellent and accessible education.
