Parents of struggling readers entering grades one - four, who suspect that their child may be dyslexic and who are Louisiana residents should apply.

What is dyslexia?

Louisiana law states that dyslexia is defined as "an unexpected difficulty in reading for an individual who has the intelligence to become a much better reader most commonly due to a difficulty in phonological processing which affects the ability of an individual to speak, read, and spell. Phonological processing means the appreciation of the individual sounds of spoken and written language." - Act 206

Does it cost anything to attend LKA?

No! LKA is a tuition free charter school.

Does LKA offer transportation?

LKA serves many parishes so bussing isn't provided and we recommend carpooling with others when feasible.

What if my child is autistic?

Dyslexia is a distinct entity and is defined an unexpected difficulty with reading for one who has the intelligence to be a better reader. Autism is a separate entity and a child cannot have both autism and dyslexia.

Admissions

The admissions process is a multistep process that begins with a screening of all application materials.

The Admissions Team assesses if the student is at risk for dyslexia and if so, the student will be tested to verify dyslexia.

If the applicant is found to be dyslexic by the admissions team, then the student is accepted into LKA or placed on a waitlist for when a spot becomes available at LKA.
